Overview

Northern Stage in White River Junction, VT seeks an experienced Scenic Charge Artist to join the full time staff. Northern Stage is a LORT D 240 seat regional theater, producing 6 mainstage shows, educational programs, a New Works festival, and 4-6 other events year-round. This position reports directly to the Technical Director, and will coordinate and plan all paint-related activities necessary to execute programming.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
-Interpret design drawings/elevations and communicate with designers.
-Develop and execute the paint techniques needed for each project.
-Plan and manage the paint budget for all shows and events.
-Lead a small team of scenic artists.
-Set and maintain shop hours.
-Load-in and change over technical elements for each production.
-Order and maintain the paint stock, and keep the paint shop and work areas clean and safe.
-Provide support for events outside the mainstage and education seasons as needed.

Qualifications:
-Knowledge of theatrical scenic painting and surface treatments.
-Ability to read construction drawings and paint elevations.
-Capacity to solve problems and good communication skills.
-Maturity and understanding of the artistic process.
-Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
-Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work quickly and accurately with attention to detail.
-Comfortable working at heights exceeding 20 feet in a lift and on a tension mesh grid.
-Proficiency in paint tools and in cleaning, care, and maintenance of all paint tools.
-Proficiency in color matching, carving, faux finishes, texturing, marbling, and wood graining.
-Ability to create samples and to execute large 20’x50’ drops.
-Valid driver’s license.
-Ability to lift 75lbs.
-Availability for over-night calls.

The ideal candidate is a self-motivating individual who displays leadership qualities and can prioritize and execute required duties. This position helps other production departments as needed and works alongside apprentices to promote a safe and healthy work/learning environment. Some nights and weekends required. Standard work days are Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:45pm. Starting salary for this position is $425/week, plus housing (all utilities/internet included), or $575/week if you choose to decline housing. Contract Dates: ASAP-5/31/20 with the possibility of renewal for future seasons.
