The Contemporary American Theater Festival at Shepherd University is welcoming applications for Props Artisans and Carpenters. CATF, a LORT D summer festival and leading producer of contemporary plays, is dedicated to telling diverse stories and developing new American theater. The festival premieres or produces multiple plays per season in three venues in rotating rep. CATF is committed to supporting the unique needs of new work while fostering an environment of fun and company community. Located 90 minutes from DC, CATF makes its home in one of America’s coolest small towns, Shepherdstown, WV.

The Festival Charge Artist will oversee a department consisting of an Assistant Charge Artist, two Scenic Artists, and two Scenic Art Interns who finish, paint, and produce scenery for the festival’s six productions. CATF uses USA 829 designers for a majority of the design elements and sometimes helps support rising designers. CATF designs often feature realistic settings in close proximity to audiences, so attention to detail is important.

Applicants ideally have previous repertory and/or professional experience working on multiple projects at once and be able to lead both peers and less experienced crew members. Applicants should be comfortable working in scenic treatments including, but not limited to: realistic faux finishes, carving, 3D texturing, ageing, distressing, and staining.

Applicants must be able to lift and carry 50lbs, be comfortable working on ladders and lifts up to 20′ tall, and enjoy working on teams. Flexibility, positivity, the ability to take direction well and work independently are essential to success at CATF.

For 2023, all CATF staff and artists are subject to mandatory vaccination, booster policy, and any additional CATF COVID-19 safety protocols when working within CATF facilities. CATF will continue to monitor updates in guidance for minimizing the spread of COVID-19 and will update policies in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines.

Position is seasonal, from mid May to mid-July (with a potential extension through early August, which can be discussed during the interview). All staff and interns are provided free, air-conditioned housing within walking distance of the theaters and workspaces (also air conditioned,) 1-2 meals per day during tech, and free use of university gym, pool, and laundry facilities.
