Job Description:
Working closely with the Technical Director and Set Designer, the Scenic Charge Artist will lead a small staff of Scenic Artists to complete work on all scenic elements (primarily through painting) to achieve the Set Designer’s artistic vision.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Read and interpret the drafting, renderings, models, and research materials for proper execution of design finish
Coordinate with the Technical Director, Production Manager, and other production department heads about construction, paint scheduling, and necessary work space allocation
Determine the proper techniques and materials necessary to complete the Set Designer’s vision of scenic elements
Communicate with and provide samples to Set designer
Work in direct communication with Assistant Scenic Charge and other Scenic Artists, overhire and/or volunteers to assure accurate and desired finishes
Create and maintain all necessary paperwork and color tracking
Coordinate with the Set Designer and Properties Master on carved foam elements and specialty finishes of properties, furniture, and set dressing
Maintain, organize, and ensure cleanliness of paint shop space, tools, equipment, and supplies
Provide paint touch-up kits for the maintenance and upkeep of the paint finishes during show runs
Attend weekly Department head meetings
Attend weekly production meetings
Perform other duties as assigned by the Production Manager

Manage the paint budget, including purchasing and bookkeeping for inventory, equipment, supplies, and individual show paint budgets
Maintains an up to date budgeting spreadsheet

Safety and Maintenance:
Take an active role in the implementation of ASF’s health and Safety policy
Oversee routine inspection and maintenance of all paint equipment
Maintain a clean and safe work space for all personnel
Ensure best practice and use of protective wear by staff and volunteers
Properly handle, use, and dispose of all toxic materials in the work space

Characteristics and experience vital to this position:
Familiarity with theatrical/entertainment working environment
Proven leadership ability
Ability to prioritize and adapt in a fast paced environment
Demonstrated skill in various scenic painting techniques, including but not limited to wood graining, marbling, brick work, other faux techniques, carving, sculpting, texturing, and cartooning.
Familiarity with various scenic art tools including, but not limited to, brushes, roller, bamboo, graining tools, and sprayers
Knowledge and experience working with and painting drops and other soft goods
Attention to detail
Must be able to lift at least 75 pounds unaided and in repetition
Ability to regularly stand, bend, kneel, reach, and crouch
May be required to occasionally work in extreme conditions, such as at various heights, in confined spaces, in high temperatures, and during adverse weather conditions
Must maintain a safe and orderly working environment
Must maintain a valid driver’s license
Must be willing to work some nights, weekends, and/or early mornings
