Overview

The Scenic Charge Artist leads and oversees the painting of scenery and other set elements for Opera San Jose’s productions and special projects. This position reports to the Technical Director. The Scenic Charge Artist must know how to safely operate all common woodworking tools. The position includes Outreach and Special Event set design opportunities

 

Responsibilities for this position include:
-Maintaining a clean and safe working environment; including daily cleaning of tools, sealing paint containers, tidying workspaces, clearing fire exit lanes, updating SDS binder when new products are purchased and complying with Cal/OSHA laws and regulations

-Working with the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director to determine budgets, discuss paint-friendly build techniques, schedule the paint shop and purchase all materials

-Attending Production meetings as determined by the Technical Director

-Self-managing workloads in order to meet deadlines

-Recruitment, training and overseeing of volunteer and over-hire painters
-Communicating with Set Designers and client representatives for finishes on all set elements
-Coordinating with Scene Shop Supervisor, Properties Master and all production staff to ensure productions are executed to the highest quality and on time
-Reading and interpreting construction drawings, paint elevations and set models

-Material surface preparation including but not limited to filling, sanding and basecoating

-Foam carving/sculpting, layout, ageing, texture, sampling, sealants, stenciling, marbling, wood graining, paint mixing, backdrops, translucent drops, wood stains, paint archiving for remounts/rentals
-Overseeing the quality of scenery before it leaves the shop

 

Qualifications:

Legally Employable in the US. Valid Driver’s License. 2+ years experience. BFA preferred. Computer experience with: Zoom, Asana, Microsoft: Excel, Word, Outlook.

 

Additional Job Details:

·Position Type: Full-time Hourly with PTO accrual and partially supported health benefits

·Work Location: Primarily Scene Shop, two days at the theatre for each show’s paint notes,         and some offsite locations as needed

·Typical Workday: 8am-5pm

·Pay Frequency: Every 2 weeks

·Pay Rate: Competitive, based on experience

·Start Date: July 18, 2022
