Reporting to the Fabrication Manager and Project Managers, Lead Painters are responsible for painting and treating scenery while maintaining high quality finishes on a variety of custom built projects. Lead Painters will work closely with the Fabrication Manager, Project Managers, and other department Leads to make sure they meet the established quality standards and timelines of all projects. They must have knowledge of paint and scenic treatments specific to special events, staging, theater and retail displays and working in a constantly changing and fast paced production environment.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Painting of scenery and delegating task amongst team of painters
  • Leading and managing team of painters across all assigned projects
  • Coordinating with other Department Leads to maximize efficient work flow
  • Willingness to communicate with clients/designers as needed
  • Working on projects as outlined by Project Managers and the Fabrication Manager while adhering to the department’s production schedule
  • Responsible for ordering all materials for paint department along with Project Managers. Become familiar with methods for purchasing including placing online orders and having a knowledge of distributors we use
  • Working from drawings and color renderings to verify color specifications and paint with attention to detail and quality
  • Maintaining best practices and sound painting techniques
  • Appropriately packing paint kits for designated jobs
  • Produce samples for clients that reflect the high quality and organization of our work
  • Effectively communicating, both orally and in writing, and remaining professional at all times
  • Ensuring proper safety practices are followed, personal protective equipment is worn at all times, and that a safe and efficient work space is maintained

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 2+ years’ experience of scenic painting in a scenic fabrication shop or with a theatre company
  • Extensive knowledge of traditional scenic tools and techniques
  • Ability to do custom color mixing and faux finishing
  • Willingness to work overtime, nights, and weekends when necessary to deliver the project on time
  • Ability to use ladders and carry at least 60 pounds
