Barrington Stage Company, an award-winning professional theatre company located in the heart of the Berkshires, is seeking a Charge Scenic Artist to join our team in Pittsfield, MA. This position oversees the paint shop and scenic painting for productions on our Boyd-Quinson Stage, and St Germain Stage. The Charge Scenic Artist oversees the Scenic Artists. This position requires a driven and passionate professional with strong leadership and organizational skills, extensive knowledge of paint techniques and historical context, and the ability to manage multiple productions and the paints team.

Responsibilities:
– Execute the artistic designs through high quality scenic painting for all of BSC’s 2022 season’s productions, while remaining within budget
– Accurately estimate materials and labor costs from designers’ renderings and research
– Prepare paint samples as needed for the Scenic Designer and Director
– Work closely with the TD so scenic elements are completed in a timely fashion to allow paint treatments to be applied and dry before load-in
– Consult with other departments about construction decisions and techniques that may affect surface preparations and finish treatments
– Purchase materials, supplies and tools necessary for the painting and texturing of scenery and drops
– Create schedules and oversee the flow of work through the paint shop in an effective manner
– Coordinate with other departments on load-in schedule to ensure maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness
– Maintain paint shop tools and equipment, to ensure they are in safe and proper working order and properly cleaned and put away
– Ensure the proper storage and disposal of paints
– Keep the paint shop and storage areas clean and free of debris
– Provide timely and up to date expense reports
– Attend production meetings, rehearsals, technical rehearsals and additional meetings as required

Skills:
– Strong leadership, communication and organizational skills
– Able to schedule and supervise scenic artists
– Cost estimation, budgetary and time management skills
– Thorough knowledge of painting and texturing techniques including wood graining, faux marbling, photo-realistic, stenciling, large scale drop painting and foam carving
– Working knowledge of shop tools and equipment
– Knowledge of art history and period
– Ability to read blueprints and familiarity with construction materials
– Proficient with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Adobe Acrobat

This position reports to the Director of Production and Operations. It is full-time, seasonal position, starting May, 9th, 2022 through September 4th, 2022 (dates negotiable). Salary is $800 per week, with housing included.
