The Gateway Performing Arts Center of Suffolk County is seeking a SCENIC ARTIST/PROPS ASSISTANT for the Prep/Load-In of its highly acclaimed HAUNT. The Gateway is a professional, non-profit theater located roughly 55 miles east of New York City on Long Island in Bellport, NY. Salary is negotiable, and on-site housing is provided if needed. Gateway will also assist with transportation to and from its location in New York. A typical Gateway work week is 5 days. The exception is Tech/Opening weeks which is a 6-day week, with additional compensation. Please submit a cover letter, and resume.

Scenic Artist/Properties Assistant Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Assist the Prop/Paint Supervisor in all activities and safety of the Prop + Paint Shop + storage spaces
Paint scenic and prop haunt elements including flame treating based on direction from Haunt Art Director and Prop And Paint Supervisor
Assist in the construction, fabrication and acquisition of all props for the Haunt in a timely fashion
Assist in the maintenance and repair of props for all performances
Help document and maintain paint and props from Haunt Stock
Maintain a safe, secure, clean + organized office, shop and work space

Qualifications:

Various Scenic Painting techniques (distressing, lettering, marbling + wood grain, etc.)
Working with fire retardant additives
Prior Prop Department experience (you will work with Team Props when there is nothing to paint)
Good communication skills + problem solving
Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others
Ability to prioritize, multi-task and work quickly and accurately with attention to detail
Ability to safely lift 50lbs

The Scenic Artist/Properties Assistant will occasionally help in other areas of production on an as needed basis. Staff positions in all departments will be expected to work alongside apprentices and to promote a healthy and safe work/learning environment.
