Overview

The Actors Theatre of Louisville seeks a Scenic Charge Artist.

The Scenic Charge Artist will support all productions through consultation with the Technical Director, both Scenic and Lighting designers and occasionally the Director, and determine painting processes to achieve the appropriate finished look for each scenic piece.

The Essential Functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

•Work as the primary artist on the scenic requirements of all productions while utilizing Overhire Scenic Artists as needed per production and one (1) Scenic Apprentice as pertains to their educational program.
•Participation in production process to further interdepartmental collaboration and the artistic vision of the production.
•Through consultation with the Technical Director determine staffing needs within an established budget; including hiring and evaluation of personnel.
•Stay informed of health and safety issues regarding materials and equipment.
•Conduct tests and provide samples for approval by Scenic and Lighting Designers as well as production team to determine appropriate painting processes.
•Collaborate with the Technical Director to project cost and schedule painting of scenery, set properties, trim properties and occasionally hand properties.
•Paint and/or supervise all aspects of paint process from lay-in through completion and assume responsibility for the timely completion of work within budgeted limitations.
•Coordinate distribution of work among various spaces through consultation with the Technical Director.
•Attend production meetings, technical note sessions and rehearsals as deemed necessary by the Technical Director.
•Create and/or assist in the creation of digital images that meet format requirements for large and small scale printing.
•Maintain safe and clean work environment in all shops, theatres and designated paint spaces.
•Responsible for maintenance, purchasing, inventory of equipment and other supplies.
•Provide correct documentation of any staff records, personnel information and time sheets for Overhire Scenic Artists.
•Assist other departments as time and production needs demand.
•Maintain an environment of respect to all staff, guest artists, stake holders, community leaders and vendors.
•Responsible for managing the theatre’s respiratory safety program.
•Carry out other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by direct supervisor or management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•Extensive knowledge of theatrical paints, dyes and scenic painting techniques.
•An understanding of theatrical design processes.
•Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
•Ability to appropriately prioritize.
•Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and reposition large objects weighing up to 50 pounds either alone or with a team.
•Comfortable working on ladders, mechanical lifts or other high places.
•Ability to comfortable work in confined spaces.
•Ability to squat, crawl, walk, crouch, and kneel.
•Ability to work as a team member and maintain a positive attitude in stressful situations.
•Ability to unite and collaborate with staff, guest artists, stakeholders, community leaders and vendors.

Minimum Qualifications:

•Four (4) years of professional experience.
•Will be required to participate in the Theatre’s respirator program.
•Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator or other imaging software.
•Must work a flexible schedule which include some evenings and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

•Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Theatre.
•Three (3) years of supervisory experience.
•Experience working in a scene shop of a regional theatre.
•Understanding of AutoCAD 2012 or later.

Pay is $850 per week. Start Date: 7/8/2019. End Date: 4/26/2020.
