Northern Stage in White River Junction, VT seeks an experienced scenic artist for its 2019-2020 season. Northern Stage is a LORT D 240 seat regional theater in VT, producing 6 main stage shows, 4 educational productions, and 4-6 other events year-round, with the main stage season falling between the months of August and May. The Scenic Artist will work closely with the Scenic Charge Artist and will assist in coordinating and planning all activities leading up to load in.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
-Assist the Scenic Charge in painting all scenic pieces and keeping inventory.
-Load-in and change over technical elements for each production.
-Act as part of a run crew as needed.
-Keep the paint shop and work areas clean and safe.
-Carving, faux finishes and texturing.
-Creating large 20×50’ drops.
-Provide support for events outside the main stage and education seasons.

-Knowledge of theatrical scenic painting and surface treatments.
-Ability to read construction drawings and paint elevations.
-Capacity to solve problems and good communication skills.
-Maturity and understanding of the artistic process.
-Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
-Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work quickly and accurately with attention to detail.
-Valid driver’s license.
-Comfortable working at heights exceeding 20 feet in a lift and on a tension mesh grid.
-Proficiency in paint tools and in cleaning, care, and maintenance of all paint tools.
-Proficiency in color matching.
-Ability to create faux finishes.
-Ability to create samples, marbling, and wood graining.
-Ability to lift 75lbs.
Availability for over-night calls.

The ideal candidate is a self-motivating individual who prioritizes and executes required duties. This position helps other production departments as needed and works alongside apprentices to promote a safe and healthy work/learning environment. Some nights and weekends required. Standard work days are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am-4:45 pm. Starting salary for this position is $325/week, plus housing valued at $200/week (all utilities/internet included).
